New-account credit
Automatic, no code
Applied at registration or first payment. The most reliable discount because it is tied to the account, not to a campaign.
Coupons · mechanism over codes
A coupon page that lists dead codes is worse than no page. This one shows where codes come from, how to test one in about a minute, and what to do when it fails.
Three types
Three mechanisms, three different rules. None of them is a promise that a specific code is live today.
New-account credit
Applied at registration or first payment. The most reliable discount because it is tied to the account, not to a campaign.
Campaign code
Announced on the partner’s own banners and help pages. It has an expiry and often a category or line restriction.
Shipping credit
Discounts a shipping line or weight band, not the item price. It can disappear when you change the line.
The 60-second test
Do not pay. The coupon field is usually inactive until the cart has an item.
Enter the code in the discount field. Watch the total, not the toast message.
A working code changes the total or adds a discount line. A dead code leaves it unchanged.
Do not pay a higher total to keep a broken code. Try the new-account credit instead.
Why codes die
Compare before you chase
| Mechanism | What it discounts | Typical trigger | Can it stack? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coupon code | Order or category | Campaign, newsletter, partner banner | Sometimes, per checkout rules |
| Invite / referral code | Account credit or first order | Registration through a link or code | Usually not with a coupon |
| Shipping credit | A line or weight band | Line promotion, seasonal event | Sometimes with an item coupon |
Myths
A 20% shipping discount on a $10 parcel is smaller than a $5 item credit. Compare the total, not the percentage.
They do. A code copied from a video last month is usually dead.
Sometimes, but do not plan a purchase around a screenshot. The checkout is the contract.
Most checkouts allow one item discount and one shipping discount at most. Read the rows.
Questions
Because a code can die between publication and your checkout. A list of expired codes wastes your time and makes the page untrustworthy. We explain where codes come from and how to test one.
A coupon usually discounts an order or a shipping line. An invite or referral code is tied to an account relationship and may credit both sides. They are not interchangeable.
Sometimes, but the checkout decides. Add one, read the discount row, then try the second. If the total does not move, it did not stack.
Do not pay. Remove it, check the expiry and the line restriction, and try the new-account credit instead. A code that fails is not a reason to accept a higher total.
A coupon is only real when the total moves. Open the partner coupon page and test it.
